Build up your "fear" resistance. In most people, the fear of loss is a
much stronger motivator than the desire for gain. Knowing this can be
quite useful in boosting your career promotions, as it can be very
persuasive to spell out what your prospects will lose by not taking
action.
An example of this comes from a sales study, people who were interested in
saving home energy costs were asked one of two questions:
"Did you know you can save an extra 75 cents a day by implementing our
recommendations?"
Or....
"Did you know it costs you an extra 75 cents a day if you don't
implement these recommendations?"
Question # 2 brought the most sales because it more directly tapped
into the universal fear of loss.
This fear ruins our good luck if we let it control us.. Most people tiptoe
through life too fearfully. Like little children, we cling to the pole of
our carousel pony tightly with both hands. We're afraid we may fall off if
we stretch for the brass ring. Is it any wonder we keep going in boring
circles, without a big dream to energize our hearts and souls each
morning?
People who work with the elderly say that at the end of life, the most
common regret is not over what we did, but what we failed to do: the
chance not taken, the business not started, the dream not followed, the
talent not nourished, the novel not written, the product not tested, the
road not taken, the apology not given. So much music dies bottled up
inside us, because we were too fearful to let it out. Don't let this
happen to you. If you don't push fear into a corner, it will push
you into a corner."
The remedy: build your risk muscle, like any other, by using it more
often, even in small things. A little more risk adds spice and adventure
to life, and can greatly increase your good luck. Fortune favors the bold.
Be outrageous. It will start fantastic word-of-mouth, spark some media
buzz, and uncork a barrel of new successes.
Make "persistence" your primary
characteristic.
This quote is attributed to President Calvin Coolidge , "Nothing in the
world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded
genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of
educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
A top promoter, kept this sign over his desk: "The harder I work, the
luckier I get."
Other promoters would marvel at how "lucky" he was, because he so often
got the radio station to play his singer's music. The secret of his luck?
He was more persistent than anyone else. He said most promoters give up on
a radio program director after calling two, three or, at most, four times
and getting the brush off. He developed what he called his "rule of nine."
He would call hard to convince program directors at least nine times.
Why nine? Because it would take an average of nine calls to convince
difficult program director to put his singers into regular rotation radio
play. But, most other promoters threw in the towel after just three or
four calls.
Want more success in your music career ? Apply your own rule of nine
contacts. Send a personal letter, a Christmas card, or a birthday card.
Find an newspaper or magazine article that he's sure to find interesting.
Clip it and drop a short note in with it saying you were
reading music related news and ran across this. If you know his favorite
hobby send him a clipping about it. If he's a golfer and PGA changes a
rule send him the clipping. Nine hooks dangling in the water, or 50 will
catch more fish than one.
The Single Most Important Thing
In Creating Good Luck
To reach a destination, you must first have one. Based on my experience,
the most important ingredient in filling your life with good luck is
clarity. I'm talking about real clarity about what you want.
Put simply, when you are clear about what you want, you're a lot more
likely to get it.
A master archer said to his archery student, "If you wish to hit a target,
you must first see it." Before you can arrive at a destination, you must
first have one.
This sounds obvious. It sounds almost simple-minded. Still we rush into
activities, relationships, and projects. We spend months or years,
without first taking a few seconds to ask ourselves, "Why am I doing this?
What is my goal here? What outcome do I hope to achieve?"
You will be so much luckier in life and your music career, if you define
and then visualize your successful outcome before jumping in. Review your
clear image of success before every new work session, to keep yourself
heading straight for the target you have envisioned.
Before you run off to your next meeting, picture clearly what you want
to be the successful outcome of your meeting. Your clear vision beforehand
will keep bringing the meeting back into sharp focus when people wander,
and you will accomplish a lot more.
Four thousand years ago Sun Tzu said, "The battle is won before it is
engaged."
The architect sees her majestic skyscraper long before the first concrete
is poured.
In every major activity, first devote a few moments to clarify and clearly
picture your objective. When you are crystal clear about what you want,
and then envision success vividly and repeatedly, all the universe
conspires to help you.
This is because your mind is like a powerful radio transmitter, and when
you mentally broadcast with clarity, regularity and vivid mental imagery
exactly what you want to experience, the whole universe is listening.
Forces seen and unseen respond to your call. Allies assemble. Assistance
arrives, opportunities materialize, often from the most unexpected
sources. Sure it's good luck, but good luck that you've attracted to
yourself by broadcasting a clear message of your desired outcome.
The reverse is also true. When you broadcast worry and fear, or images of
hate, hostility and anger, you will attract these to yourself as well.
The key is to realize that you are able to think whatever thoughts you
wish and, in so doing, attract into your life exactly what you
consistently think about.
Before each major activity you undertake, remember to imagine with clarity
exactly what you want to experience, and you'll be amazed at how lucky
you've become.
